Spots and stains don’t just look bad — they can permanently damage your carpet and upholstery if they’re not treated right. At Vital Clean, we don’t mask problems. We remove them at the source.

Why Spots Come Back
Ever cleaned a spot only to have it reappear a few days later? That’s not your imagination. It’s called wicking — and it’s the reason DIY spot cleaning so often fails.
Here’s what happens: when a spill soaks into your carpet, it doesn’t just sit on the surface. It travels down the fibers and into the backing and pad underneath. When you blot or spray the surface, you clean what you can see — but the deep-down soil stays put. As the carpet dries, that hidden soil wicks back up the fibers to the surface, and the spot “comes back.”
The other culprit is residue. Most store-bought spot cleaners leave behind a soapy or sticky residue. That residue acts like a magnet for new dirt. So even if the original spot is gone, the area gets dirty faster and looks like a spot again within weeks.
We solve both problems. Our process extracts the soil from deep in the fibers (not just the surface), and we leave no residue behind — so spots stay gone.
Our Spot & Stain Removal Process
Every stain is different. Coffee isn’t wine. Pet urine isn’t ink. We don’t use a one-size-fits-all spray — we match the treatment to the stain.
- Identify. We figure out what caused the stain and what your carpet or fabric is made of. Different fibers react differently to cleaning agents — using the wrong product can set a stain permanently or damage the material.
- Treat. We apply the right specialized treatment for that specific stain and let it dwell. This breaks the bond between the stain and the fiber without harsh scrubbing that damages carpet.
- Extract. We rinse and extract the treatment along with the dissolved stain — pulling it out from deep in the fibers, not just wiping the surface. No residue left behind to attract new dirt.
Common Stains We Remove
With 25+ years of experience and IICRC certification, we’ve seen (and removed) just about everything. Here are the stains we treat most often:
- Coffee & tea — Tannin stains that darken over time if not treated properly.
- Red stains — Red wine, Kool-Aid, fruit punch, and dye transfer from clothes or rugs. We break down the dye at the fiber level instead of just bleaching the surface.
- Pet stains — Urine, vomit, and tracked-in messes. We treat both the stain and the odor at the source. See our pet stain removal page for more.
- Ink — Ballpoint, marker, and printer ink need solvent-based treatment, not water.
- Grease & oil — Cooking grease, automotive oil, and oily food spills.
- Rust — From furniture legs, metal objects, or water damage. Requires specialized treatment.
- Garage & motor oil — Fresh drips and ground-in oil on garage floors, driveways, and concrete. For driveways and concrete, see our exterior power washing.
Slime Removal
Homemade slime — glue, food coloring, glitter, and all — bonds to carpet fibers fast. We break it down and extract it without spreading the color.
Makeup Stain Removal
Foundation, lipstick, and powders grind into carpet pile. We lift them with the right solvents for the formula — no bleaching, no spreading.
Why DIY Spot Cleaners Fail
We’re not knocking you for trying. But here’s the honest truth about why that bottle under the sink usually makes things worse:
- Wrong product for the stain. Using an alkaline cleaner on an acid-based stain (or vice versa) can set it permanently.
- Too much product. Over-wetting pushes the stain deeper and can cause mold in the pad.
- Scrubbing. Rubbing frays carpet fibers and spreads the stain outward.
- Residue. Leftover soap attracts new dirt and the “spot” comes back.
- Heat. Using hot water on the wrong stain (like protein-based) cooks it into the fiber permanently.
If you’ve already tried DIY and the spot is still there (or came back), don’t worry — call us before it sets permanently. The sooner we treat it, the better the outcome. Need it done today? We offer same-day service.
Spot & Stain Removal FAQs
Can you remove old, set-in stains?
Sometimes. It depends on what caused the stain, how long it’s been there, and what was already tried on it. Stains that have been heat-set or treated with the wrong chemical are harder. We’ll give you an honest assessment — if we don’t think we can improve it, we’ll tell you. That’s our “Love it or it’s free” guarantee: if you’re not happy, you don’t pay.
Will the spot come back after you clean it?
Not if we do it right. Spots come back because of wicking (deep soil rising to the surface) or residue (soap attracting new dirt). Our process extracts from deep in the fibers and leaves no residue, so the spot stays gone. If a spot does reappear, call us — we’ll re-treat it.
Is your spot treatment safe for kids and pets?
Yes. We use eco-friendly, non-toxic treatments and we rinse and extract thoroughly — no harsh chemical residue left in your carpet or upholstery.
How much does spot and stain removal cost?
It depends on the type, size, and number of stains. Small spot treatment can often be added to a carpet cleaning appointment. For a firm quote, call or text 801-793-0906 — we’ll ask a few questions and give you straight pricing.
Do you guarantee stain removal?
We guarantee you’ll love the result or it’s free. Some stains (like bleach damage, which removes color rather than adding stain) can’t be “cleaned” — but we’ll tell you that upfront honestly rather than take your money for something that won’t work.
What areas do you serve?
We serve homes and businesses across Salt Lake County and Utah County, including Salt Lake City, Sandy, Draper, Riverton, South Jordan, Murray, Lehi, Orem, and surrounding areas. See all our service areas.
